I was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1976. Since I can remember I have always had a compulsion to draw and a fascination with colour. I attended the University of Cape Town in South Africa, obtaining a degree in painting. After my degree I spent a little time in Europe before immigrating to Australia in 2005. I currently live in Hong Kong and am represented by Brenda May Gallery in Sydney. ‘Waking Me Forever’ is my latest body of work.
There is an ethereal and dreamlike quality to these paintings with many references to the natural world and to our biological makeup. Sleep, dream and wakefulness collide in a realm of fragmented imagination. The here and now is but transient. Plants, masquerade masks, anatomical matter, and cell like structures, hover and drift within these dreamscapes, while the birds reference the gateway keepers between the sacred and the earthly realms.
At the same time, an uncomfortable uneasiness of other worldliness pervades the paintings perhaps offering an indication of the dreams that follow after the passing of our mortality.
